Sebastian Vettel comments on the title race
After eighteen rounds filled with great spectacle, technical controversies, and off-track scandals, the 2024 season is set to intensify in its final six races, with the Austin weekend representing a crucial turning point for the title assignment.
Despite McLaren’s clear dominance, Lando Norris finds himself significantly trailing leader Max Verstappen, who leads the standings with a 52-point advantage over his friend and direct championship rival. Additionally, thanks to the extra point earned by Daniel Ricciardo in his last career race in Singapore, the exceptional Dutch driver is now in control of his destiny.
This means that even if Lando Norris were to win every single weekend leading up to Abu Dhabi, Max Verstappen would only need to finish second in each Grand Prix to claim the world championship for the fourth consecutive time.
On the other hand, the McLaren driver can rely on an MCL-38 that, particularly since the summer, has significantly outperformed the RB20, with Max Verstappen having gone eight races without a victory.
In light of all this, who can be considered the favorite for the title?
“As a fan now, I hope it goes down to the wire,” Sebastian Vettel attempted to answer the question while attending the Blue Earth Summit in London. “It’s great to watch, especially as the gap narrows.”
The four-time world champion then leaned towards a prediction: “It’s hard to say, but I believe Max is the favorite. If I had to bet on one of the two, I would currently put my money on Max.” – the former Red Bull and Ferrari driver concluded.
