Max Verstappen prepares for Spa: “Excited to work closely with Laurent Mekies”. Red Bull begins a new era at Spa without Christian Horner, as Max Verstappen looks forward to working with Laurent Mekies.

The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team, as it faces its first race weekend without long-time team principal Christian Horner at the helm. Horner, a central figure and co-founder of the Milton Keynes-based outfit that rose from the ashes of Jaguar Racing, was recently dismissed. Taking his place is Laurent Mekies, a former sporting director at Scuderia Ferrari and, more recently, team principal of Red Bull’s sister team, Racing Bulls, since the start of the 2024 Formula One season.

Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion and current Red Bull Racing driver, is preparing for what he considers one of his home races, given the proximity of Spa to his native Netherlands. He expressed great enthusiasm about collaborating directly with Laurent Mekies for the first time within the main team. Verstappen said that Spa-Francorchamps has always been his favourite track on the Formula 1 calendar, describing it as a classic, old-school circuit where a perfect lap demands precision and bravery.

He particularly appreciates the layout of the track, which includes legendary high-speed corners like Eau Rouge and Raidillon, as well as the natural elevation changes that make the circuit more technically demanding. Reflecting on the recent British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Verstappen noted that although the race itself did not deliver the desired result, securing pole position in qualifying was a positive sign. He also shared that he had recently returned to Red Bull’s factory to spend time in the simulator with the team, in preparation for the weekend in Belgium.

The Dutchman highlighted the immense support he receives from the “Orange Army” of fans at Spa, calling it his second home race after Zandvoort. In keeping with tradition, he confirmed he would wear his distinctive orange helmet for the occasion.

Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda, who drives for Racing Bulls but previously worked under Laurent Mekies during the 2024 season and the early part of 2025, expressed hope that the leadership change at Red Bull could help reset the momentum after a series of underwhelming results. The Japanese driver admitted to being stuck in a difficult cycle recently but is determined to bounce back with strong performances at the upcoming two races before the summer break.

Tsunoda explained that he spent the recent break training intensely, both physically and mentally, with the aim of arriving at Spa in top form. He underlined how much he values working with Laurent Mekies, stating that their previous collaboration was productive and that he understands Mekies’ approach and expectations well. Tsunoda emphasised that the entire team is focused on moving forward, and that he personally is committed to delivering the level of performance needed.

He concluded by noting that Spa is a fun and challenging track that could suit the car well, although the Sprint race format always adds a layer of difficulty. Nevertheless, the work and preparation completed during the break should allow the team to approach the weekend in optimal condition.
