Eliminated surprisingly in Q2 with the twelfth-fastest time, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen will be starting near the back of the grid at the 2024 Formula 1 Brazilian GP, also having to serve a five-place grid penalty for replacing power unit components.
Due to yet another red flag at the end of Q2 caused by Lance Stroll’s crash, Max Verstappen didn’t have the chance to make a final attempt to improve his position and was eliminated along with his teammate Sergio Perez.
Red Bull’s Qualifying Debacle
In a heated interview after the qualifying session which was held at the 4.309-kilometre Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Brazil, the three-time world champion didn’t hold back, criticizing both the FIA and his team: “If a car hits the wall, there should be an immediate red flag.”
“I don’t understand why it takes 30 or 40 seconds for the red flag to come out. It’s just nonsense.” – he pointed out.
The three-time world champion added, “Honestly, I’ve let it go. It’s just too stupid to discuss. It’s ridiculous.”
Despite his elimination, Max Verstappen showed he could be very competitive in wet conditions, and with a race that promises to be just as tricky weather-wise, nothing is off the table until the checkered flag. On the other hand, Lando Norris will need to make the most of his pole position advantage, but without taking excessive risks. As shown by the five red flags in qualifying, everything is still wide open for the race, and the risk of error is ever-present.
