Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Monza Grand Prix, ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The question now is whether the Dutch driver can convert his first-place start into a victory. Verstappen broke the track record previously held by Lewis Hamilton, stopping the clock at 1:18.792. Completing the front row will be Lando Norris, while current championship leader Oscar Piastri will start from the second row alongside Charles Leclerc.
After qualifying, Verstappen spoke to Sky Sport F1, reflecting on his performance at Monza and outlining his objectives for Sunday’s race in Monza.
The real challenge with the Papaya duo
Last year, the Monza GP was a very challenging race for Red Bull, especially for Max Verstappen. The four-time world champion admitted that the 2024 race had been a valuable learning experience. Speaking to Sky Sport F1, he said: “Yes, last year it was a disaster, a nightmare for us. From that race we already learned a lot and made significant changes to our car, so I knew it wouldn’t go the same way this time, but going into the weekend there were still some questions about whether it would go well or badly.”
This weekend, however, started on a very different note: “It began quite positively, and we continued to chip away session by session, improving our performance, and everything went well.”
Points will be awarded tomorrow, and Max Verstappen’s main challenge will be the McLaren pair, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Max Verstappen admitted: “Hopefully we can stay ahead in the race as well. It’s been a good weekend for us so far. It started fairly well, and the car wasn’t too far off from the beginning. In every session we’ve improved a little, and that’s what we wanted. I hope that will be enough tomorrow too, but usually in races McLaren seems to step up another gear, so I know it will be harder to beat them in the race. But I hope to be able to fight. It’s the only hope I have.”
