Oscar Piastri remains cautious despite 34-point lead over Norris on the eve of Monza: “It’s too early for calculations, I always race to win”
World Championship leader Oscar Piastri is keeping a level head and refusing to consider the title as already decided. Despite his recent victory at Zandvoort and the 34-point cushion over Lando Norris, the young McLaren driver remains grounded and rejects any notion of managing his lead, recalling past championships in junior categories that were decided in the final race.
The Australian brings up old memories of previously won championships being reopened in the closing rounds, without specifying the exact occasions. Many fans will remember, however, the 2020 F3 Championship, which concluded with a three-way battle at Mugello involving Theo Pourchaire and Logan Sargeant. “Honestly, I pay very little attention to the mathematics. In one of my previous championships, I had a much bigger advantage than this, and I watched it practically disappear before the final race. So I have personal experience of how even a seemingly comfortable margin can vanish.”
Piastri emphasizes that his mindset will not change until the situation is truly secure: “It’s still too early to make calculations or settle for anything other than first place. My approach remains exactly the same. This won’t change until the points gap is significantly larger or the remaining races are significantly fewer.”
Victory in Zandvoort strengthens Piastri’s lead
The win at Zandvoort allowed Piastri to consolidate his championship lead, benefiting from Lando Norris’s retirement. But unlike those expecting a more cautious strategy, the Australian insists that his goal remains unchanged: to maximize every race weekend and aim for the top step of the podium.
The message is clear: for Oscar Piastri, this is not the time for calculations, but for continuing to push hard, race after race, and secure victories wherever possible.
