Verstappen on Lambiase: “Our relationship will never change”

Max Verstappen continues to strongly support Gianpiero Lambiase. After the decision for the long-time race engineer to move to McLaren starting from 2028, many questions arose around the Dutch driver, with some believing he had not taken the news well. Instead, Verstappen reveals completely different details, confirming that their relationship goes far beyond professional duties. It is a deep friendship where mutual respect outweighs any on-track rivalry.

“I have a very good relationship with GP. He told me about the proposal straight away, he really values my opinion. I immediately told him he should accept it, it would be silly not to. Over these long years we have achieved great things together, we have grown together, and I am happy for him. We will always remain good friends,” he said.

Some have interpreted this separation as a “betrayal.” However, Max Verstappen continues by stressing that Lambiase’s move to McLaren is simply a major step forward in his career:

“But I want him to have this opportunity, you know? So yes, maybe you’re not that down about it or not that upset, because after all we have achieved so much together and for him it is a chance to take a step up in his career,” he concluded.

The departure of Lambiase marks the end of one of the most successful driver-engineer pairings in the history of the sport, yet Verstappen’s support highlights the maturity of their partnership. As the 2028 season approaches, the focus will likely shift to how Red Bull plans to replace such a pivotal figure in Verstappen’s inner circle and how this transition might affect the team’s long-term technical stability.
