In a paddock that thrives on rumors, complex negotiations, and hypothetical scenarios, McLaren is choosing the opposite path: closing the door before anyone even has the chance to knock. When the driver market begins to shift, it often doesn’t take a formal offer to create noise; a single name, a hypothesis, or a talent coveted by everyone is usually enough. Yet, from Woking comes a message that leaves no room for interpretation.
The pairing McLaren refuses to change
Zak Brown has no doubts about who will be driving for McLaren in the coming years. “From a McLaren perspective, I couldn’t be happier with Lando and Oscar. We have long-term agreements with them, and I think it’s the best driver pairing on and off the track. So, we have no intention of replacing either of our two superheroes,” Brown stated firmly.
These are definitive words that sound like a declaration of stability and total confidence. At a time when Max Verstappen’s name is linked to almost every top-tier team, Brown has chosen not to fuel the transfer market games.
The Verstappen links and a closed door
The question, however, remains inevitable: what if one of the current pair were to leave? “Obviously, if one were to leave, then yes, Max is a huge talent, but I’m not expecting that to happen,” Brown replied.
It is a response that acknowledges the undeniable value of the four-time world champion but reiterates the team’s absolute priority: Norris and Piastri are the present and the future of McLaren. There is no room for alternative scenarios, at least not for the time being.
In a market defined by uncertainty, McLaren is opting for continuity. Brown has effectively locked down his drivers, labeling them “superheroes” and shutting out any external speculation. The message is clear: at Woking, they aren’t looking for a savior because they believe they already have two.
This approach reflects the current strength of the Woking-based squad. By fostering a stable environment for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, McLaren is allowing its drivers to focus entirely on the title fight rather than contract distractions. In the high-pressure world of Formula 1, this level of public backing from management can be the marginal gain that keeps a team ahead of its rivals during a long and grueling championship campaign.
The strategic decision to bypass the “Verstappen sweepstakes” signals a new era of self-assuredness for the team. McLaren no longer feels the need to chase established champions to validate its project; instead, it is betting on the internal growth of its young stars. As the 2026 season progresses, the synergy between Norris and Piastri will be the foundation upon which Zak Brown hopes to build a lasting dynasty.
