In recent days, reports have circulated about Carlos Sainz Sr possibly running for the role of FIA President. The former rally champion has not made anything official yet, but he seems very inclined to submit his candidacy for the December elections. Mohammed Ben Sulayem already appears to be taking countermeasures, fully aware of his reputation among drivers but also confident in his political strength. The only “obstacle” in the Spaniard’s campaign would be a potential conflict of interest, as his son races in Formula 1; however, this is unlikely to be a serious concern, given that the FIA oversees 40 motorsport categories, and the President would be far too busy to, hypothetically, manipulate the regulations.
Many members of the paddock have already voiced their support, hoping that Sainz Sr would better understand their perspective, having spent many years behind the wheel himself. “He is a very respected figure, not only in Formula 1 but in motorsport as a whole. He has a wealth of experience and would be a fantastic candidate,” said George Russell. “There won’t be conflicts because a President doesn’t have the technical knowledge required. All those aspects are in the hands of FIA engineers. Such a political figure is barely involved in what we do. You know who they are, but they work behind the scenes, not in front of everyone.”
The sharpest jab came from Max Verstappen, who didn’t miss the chance to take a dig at Mohammed Ben Sulayem. “I believe Sainz is very respected in the paddock. People are already saying he would have a conflict of interest because of his son, but I know he’s smart enough to keep things separate. Would he be a better President? You can imagine my answer, though this isn’t the right place to say it.”
