Kimi Antonelli’s Formula 1 debut with the Mercedes team has already shown promising signs, but according to the young Italian driver, a crucial factor is the invaluable support of his race engineer: Pete “Bono” Bonnington, a legendary figure in the paddock, known for being the voice in Lewis Hamilton’s headset for over a decade and, before that, for working with Michael Schumacher during his F1 comeback.
During the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, Kimi Antonelli shared how important it is for him to have such an experienced technician by his side: “I think having someone like Bono is incredible. It’s a great privilege because he has worked with two of the best drivers in Formula 1 history: first with Michael and then with Lewis for many years.”

The 18-year-old highlighted how Peter Bonnington’s support is making a difference in his rookie season: “There are so many new scenarios to face, so much to learn, and having someone with so much experience by my side is a huge help. I feel really lucky.”
Kimi Antonelli has started his Formula 1 career on the right foot. After securing an impressive fourth place in Australia on debut, he added more valuable points with a sixth-place finish in China, despite sustaining floor damage to his Mercedes W16 in the early laps of the race.
Reflecting on his first Formula 1 weekend, Antonelli admitted: “It was a huge relief. An intense weekend, but finishing with a strong race was a great confidence boost. I won’t deny it, I was quite nervous, but now I feel more relaxed and in control.”
Aware that his journey has only just begun, Antonelli has already shown determination and maturity, aided by his daily work with one of the most experienced race engineers on the grid. “There is still so much to learn, but it’s been a good start, and I’m looking forward to the upcoming races,” he concluded.
