Max Verstappen is known for being direct, instinctive, and unfiltered—a driver who speaks his mind exactly as he thinks it, without concern for political correctness in an increasingly conformist world. This trait becomes even more pronounced when he’s behind the wheel of his Red Bull, with the adrenaline of racing amplifying his fiery temperament. During the start of the Abu Dhabi GP, the final race of the 2024 F1 season, the four-time world champion was handed a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Oscar Piastri‘s McLaren at Turn 1.
A Penalty Debated but Enforced
While many considered it a racing incident, the stewards deemed Max Verstappen responsible, a decision that effectively ruined not just Piastri’s race but also significantly impacted the Dutch driver’s. The penalty, though in line with the rules, sparked debate, especially given Verstappen’s preference for hard, no-holds-barred racing. After serving the penalty during his pit stop, the reigning world champion delivered a blunt and fiery message to the FIA stewards:
“Can we ask for a 20-second penalty? Stupid idiots?” Criticism of the FIA and Mohammed Sulayem
This scathing remark capped a weekend already steeped in controversy for Max Verstappen, who has long been at odds with the FIA stewards. His outburst not only resulted in the loss of two penalty points on his super license—bringing his total to eight out of a maximum 12—but also leaves him at risk of a one-race suspension should he incur four more points before June 2025.
Given the FIA’s stance on “political correctness,” Max Verstappen may face additional disciplinary measures, similar to the community service penalty he received for using offensive language during a press conference in Singapore. This latest incident, viewed as a direct attack on the stewards and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, may lead to further repercussions.
