Four nightmare races
The team switch, with the demotion from Red Bull to Racing Bulls, doesn’t seem to be helping Liam Lawson at the moment. After the first two disastrous races of this season behind the wheel of the RB21, there was hope that the New Zealander could find some calm and performance again with the ‘B team’, where he had shown competitiveness last year. For now, however, nothing is going right.
Both in Suzuka and Bahrain, car #30 was quite clearly beaten by his teammate, rookie Isack Hadjar. In the Sakhir race, Liam Lawson also collected a number of penalties — not exactly the best way to convince the team of his qualities. The Racing Bulls driver had close encounters with Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin and Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas, ending up with a total of 15 seconds in penalties and as many as three penalty points.
Disciplinary troubles
Now, Lawson also has to deal with a disciplinary situation that is far from enviable. The Hastings native has already accumulated 5 penalty points in the past 12 months, including the two he received last December for an incident he caused in Qatar. At 12, a suspension kicks in — likely the final blow to his F1 career. A change of course is urgently needed starting next weekend in Jeddah. Especially considering that patience is not exactly one of Red Bull management’s strong suits.
