Mercedes enters a new era
Twelve years cannot be forgotten—especially when they are twelve years of Lewis Hamilton, marked by six drivers’ titles, 105 race wins, and 104 pole positions. Mercedes will never forget Sir Lewis, just as he will never forget them. This enduring bond may even create some respectful rivalry during future Bahrain tests as Hamilton begins a new chapter.
Lewis Hamilton cares deeply about Mercedes and its future, embodied by Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Before permanently leaving the team’s European base, Lewis Hamilton left a note for his successor, a symbolic gesture akin to Ron Dennis launching Hamilton’s own career in 2007.
Lewis Hamilton’s message
The existence of this note, written immediately after the Monza Grand Prix, was revealed by Mercedes team coordinator Stephen Lord: “In Europe, we have a race base where the drivers have their rooms. Lewis was coming downstairs, ready to leave and head home. But when he got to the bottom of the stairs, he stopped, turned around, and went back to his room. Ten minutes later, he came back down and said, ‘It just occurred to me that I’ll never see that room again.’ He was deeply moved by the thought.
“Later, when I entered the room, there was a long handwritten note for Kimi,” Lord shared on *Beyond The Grid*.
“In the note, Lewis essentially welcomed Kimi to his new room, wished him good luck, and wrote some beautiful things about the team. Specifically, he told Kimi that if he took care of the team, the team would reciprocate because it’s a great team. It was truly a wonderful gesture.”
