Italian rising star Leonardo Fornaroli completed 68 laps—almost 400 km—at Silverstone in the McLaren MCL60 during a TPC session designed to build his on-track references. Compared to his debut test in Spain, this program was more advanced, including long stints, tire trials, and varied fuel loads, helping him expand his knowledge under different conditions.
The development of Leonardo Fornaroli with McLaren continues steadily. After his first test in Spain a few weeks ago, the young Italian returned to the cockpit of the MCL60 on Tuesday for another TPC session at Silverstone. The day was focused on accumulating valuable kilometers and consolidating the driving feel in preparation for simulator work that will accompany him throughout the season.
For Fornaroli, given the limited testing opportunities allowed by the current regulations, TPC sessions are a crucial chance to build confidence with a Formula 1 car. Even though the MCL60 belongs to the previous technical cycle, it provides different load characteristics and driving sensations compared to the 2026-spec cars. This still allows the driver to expand his references and adaptability on the track.
These sessions give Fornaroli a unique opportunity to rack up mileage, creating real-world data and sensations that can later be cross-referenced in the simulator. This process strengthens his development path within the McLaren Driver Development Programme (DDP), providing increasingly solid benchmarks for growth throughout the season.
At just 21 years old, Leonardo Fornaroli completed 68 laps, totaling 393 km, around the Silverstone circuit. The session represented a natural progression from his first test, aiming to advance his development. The focus was on longer stints, reduced fuel loads, and a combination of Hard and Soft tires to explore different car behaviors depending on tire choice and fuel levels.
In the weeks following his debut, Leonardo continued to support the team on track, attending even the Japanese Grand Prix. Simultaneously, he maintained a strong presence at the McLaren Technology Centre, working closely with engineers and accumulating extensive hours in the simulator—a key part of his development journey.
Leonardo Fornaroli will continue driving the MCL60 throughout the year, with further tests planned at different circuits to build a broader range of references. The goal is to understand how the car reacts to varying aerodynamic loads, something that can only partially be simulated. On-track testing allows him to fully explore the limits of an F1 car and solidify the sensations that form the foundation of his growth.
“Another great day on track, it was fantastic to be back in the MCL60. Silverstone is one of my favorite circuits, so I’m grateful to McLaren for giving me the opportunity to get back in an F1 car here,” said the young McLaren program driver after the British test.
Silverstone also holds a special place for Leonardo Fornaroli, as he won his first Formula 2 race there last year, giving the track double significance.
“Since this was my second test, the program was more advanced: I could try different setups and run with varying fuel levels, which continues to support my understanding of a Formula 1 car.”
“I’m very happy with the day and I’ve continued to improve compared to my test a few weeks ago, feeling increasingly comfortable with these machines. I look forward to continuing testing throughout the year, an essential activity for my role as McLaren Mastercard Reserve Driver and for my growth within the DDP program.”
