The renowned auction house RM Sotheby’s will sell the 1984 Toleman TG183B-05, chassis #19, in Monte Carlo on April 25. This is the car with which the late Ayrton Senna made his Formula 1 debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix. At Jacarepaguá, the debut was not particularly spectacular for the future three-time world champion, as he was forced to retire due to a turbo failure. However, in the subsequent races of that season, he managed to impress despite driving a car that was far from the top teams’ performance level.
A memorable debut
After finishing sixth in South Africa, earning his first career point, which he repeated in Belgium, the Brazilian driver achieved an incredible second place in the pouring rain of Monte Carlo. There, he had a real chance to win the race, if not for the red flag that appeared just as he was closing in on Alain Prost. This moment sparked one of the greatest rivalries in F1 history. Ayrton Senna’s other two podiums that season came in England and Portugal, both third-place finishes, convincing Lotus to make him a key part of their 1985 lineup.
The valuation
The price of Senna’s iconic Toleman is estimated between €2,800,000 and €3,800,000. But the auction will not focus solely on the Toleman: collectors will also have their eyes on other historic cars, including Ferrari models such as the 1991 642 driven by Jean Alesi and Alain Prost, and the 1978 312 T3 driven by Carlos Reutemann and Gilles Villeneuve.
