Lando Norris forced to retire: Andrea Stella clarifies McLaren issue
Lando Norris was forced to retire from the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix due to a technical problem on his McLaren, ending the team’s hopes of a historic fifth consecutive one-two finish. Oscar Piastri took the win at Zandvoort and extended his lead over his teammate and rival to 34 points. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella provided insight into what happened to car #4.
Norris’s weekend started perfectly up to Q2 in qualifying. Oscar Piastri’s pole position was somewhat unexpected, considering the English driver’s confidence on this track. At the start of the race, Max Verstappen overtook Piastri, complicating the situation. Lando Norris managed to close in on his teammate in the final stages, but then a technical problem brought his MCL39 to a halt.
Andrea Stella’s analysis
Andrea Stella explained the situation for car #4 on track. This season, there have already been several retirements linked to Mercedes power units, which could be a warning sign. He noted that the coming races will reveal whether this was an isolated incident or a recurring issue.
“Reliability has been a strong point for a long time. We experienced what appears to be a technical problem, which is always disappointing. It’s particularly inconvenient because it affects a situation where we want to maintain as much championship stability as possible,” Stella stated.
“It’s never positive to have a problem with the car, but what happened happened. The entire team will work to understand the issue and ensure it does not affect us in the future,” added the McLaren Team Principal. Despite the setback in the standings, Stella described Norris’s reaction as “mature.”
McLaren has conducted an initial review of the cause of Norris’s retirement, but early findings are inconclusive. “Based on the data, we don’t have complete proof of what happened to Lando’s car. I would avoid speculating whether it’s an engine or chassis issue. In terms of result, it doesn’t make a huge difference. We’ll identify the problem and fix it,” Stella concluded.
