Lando Norris emerges as McLaren leader after dominant Hungarian GP win. Lando Norris strengthens McLaren leadership status with Hungarian GP victory.

Lando Norris strengthened his status as McLaren’s clear leader with a commanding victory at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, delivering the team’s first win of the season after demonstrating a decisive pace advantage over Oscar Piastri. The performance also highlighted how the reigning world champion’s title triumph in Abu Dhabi last December has given him greater confidence, composure and control behind the wheel.

The opening ten rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship had all been won by Mercedes or Ferrari. That run finally ended at the last race before the summer break, when Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix and secured McLaren’s first victory of the campaign.

Lando Norris emerges as McLaren’s leader in Hungary

Throughout the Budapest weekend, Lando Norris offered further evidence of the sizeable performance gap that currently separates him from Oscar Piastri. His Hungarian Grand Prix pole position not only ended Mercedes’ qualifying monopoly but also left the Australian almost half a second behind.

Lando Norris’ only significant mistake of the weekend came at Turn 2 on the opening lap, allowing Oscar Piastri’s number 81 McLaren to take the lead. The decisive moment arrived when Oscar Piastri made his second pit stop, leaving his team-mate with a clear track on which to exploit the MCL40’s speed.

The British driver immediately lowered his lap times by more than a second. That burst of pace allowed him to complete a textbook overcut and, more importantly, underline the superiority that carried him to a second consecutive victory at the Hungaroring. The complete 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix classification confirmed McLaren’s breakthrough at the final round before Formula 1’s summer shutdown.

Lando Norris explains his advantage over Oscar Piastri

For Lando Norris, the outcome was never seriously in doubt because of the pace he had shown while following Oscar Piastri during the opening phase of the race.

“The fact that I managed to stay glued to Oscar on a circuit like this for around 40 laps, always within eight tenths, was what convinced me that I would win the race, regardless of when he stopped. The pace advantage I had was huge,” the reigning world champion explained after one of his strongest performances of the season.

Visible and unseen McLaren MCL40 upgrades make an impact

The upgrades introduced on the McLaren MCL40 undoubtedly contributed to the result. They represented the first stage of a wider development package that will be completed across the Dutch and Azerbaijan Grands Prix at Zandvoort and Baku.

McLaren has also improved its understanding of the software controlling the power unit. However, the most important factor behind Lando Norris’ decisive step forward appears to be the Formula 1 World Championship he secured in Abu Dhabi last December.

That achievement has produced a more assured and self-confident version of Lando Norris in 2026. He now appears better equipped to manage the emotions that undermined him on several occasions during the previous season, allowing him to remain composed even when a race does not initially unfold in his favour.

McLaren finally has its team leader

Those qualities have enabled the Bristol-born driver to make the difference throughout the first half of the current championship, despite suffering several reliability setbacks. His Hungarian Grand Prix performance was another demonstration of the confidence and authority that now define his driving.

The gap between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri with this generation of Formula 1 cars is therefore not purely technical. It is also a question of leadership, and McLaren finally appears to have found its captain.
