Lando Norris secured pole position for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, delivering a major breakthrough for McLaren and ending Mercedes’ perfect qualifying run this season. The British driver expressed his delight after emerging as the first non-Mercedes pole-sitter of the campaign, crediting McLaren’s latest upgrades for helping the team return to the front.
Norris had shown strong pace from practice and maintained his competitiveness throughout qualifying before producing the decisive lap in Q3. With pole secured at a circuit where track position is particularly valuable, the McLaren driver now has the best possible starting point for what he expects to be a demanding battle against Ferrari.
Lando Norris ends Mercedes’ 2026 pole position streak
Lando Norris became the first driver outside Mercedes to take pole position this season. His result at the Hungaroring ended the Anglo-German team’s run of qualifying dominance and marked McLaren’s return to the top of the grid.
McLaren arrived in Hungary with the first part of a technical development package, and the new components immediately helped make the car more competitive. The MCL40 upgrades introduced at the Hungarian Grand Prix allowed Norris to build towards pole throughout the session and establish himself as the benchmark for the rest of the field.
With a front-row starting position secured, Norris underlined just how important the new parts had been in helping McLaren rediscover its expected level of performance.
Norris credits McLaren upgrades for return to pole
Speaking to David Coulthard after qualifying, Lando Norris said: “I am very happy to be back on top. Ferrari were fast, but we brought some upgrades that helped me a lot. I am really pleased because starting at the front matters a great deal at this circuit.”
Norris added enthusiastically that the result represented an important moment after several difficult races in which McLaren had worked hard to rediscover the ideal feeling with the car.
Despite setting the fastest time, the British driver admitted that his decisive lap had not been flawless, suggesting there may still have been further performance available.
“Honestly, I had confidence throughout the day. I am even surprised by the lap time I produced because my lap was not perfect,” Norris explained. “In the end, however, only the final result matters.”
He added that he had taken slightly too much risk in certain sections of the circuit, but the car had responded exceptionally well and allowed him to extract its maximum potential when it mattered most.
Ferrari expected to challenge McLaren in the race
Lando Norris has now turned his attention to Sunday’s race, which is expected to be closely contested. The McLaren driver anticipates an aggressive challenge from Ferrari, particularly after the Italian team demonstrated strong pace and effective management of the medium tyres.
The characteristics of the Hungaroring had already been expected to favour some of the Ferrari SF-26’s low-speed strengths, while McLaren’s qualifying breakthrough has added another contender to the fight at the front.
“I am in the best possible position, but we know that Ferrari start very well,” Norris said. “They made a big step on the medium tyres and perhaps they could have achieved even more in qualifying. We will see what happens tomorrow.”
The British driver also stressed that managing the start and the opening corners will be crucial. Overtaking is not straightforward at the Hungaroring, meaning that maintaining the lead could make the difference between victory and a much more complicated afternoon.
McLaren returns to its expected competitive level
Norris concluded by thanking the entire McLaren team for its work, emphasising that the latest upgrades had restored the car to the performance level the team expected to reach during the remainder of the season.
The pole position also strengthens McLaren’s prospects in the wider championship fight, with every result carrying increasing importance in the 2026 Formula 1 driver standings. After breaking Mercedes’ qualifying dominance, the next challenge for Norris will be converting McLaren’s renewed pace into victory on Sunday.
