Ralf Schumacher has backed Kimi Antonelli as a worthy 2026 Formula 1 world champion, praising the Italian driver’s rapid development, composure and ability to extract more performance from the Mercedes W17 than George Russell. However, Ralf Schumacher also warned that Mercedes must introduce upgrades quickly as McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull increase the pressure.
Formula 1 is preparing to resume after the long summer break, with the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort scheduled for this weekend. The race represents the halfway point of the championship and could provide important indications about the competitive order for the second half of the season.
Kimi Antonelli leads the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship by 50 points over Lewis Hamilton and 59 points over George Russell. Ralf Schumacher believes that situation reflects how significantly the championship picture evolved during the opening half of the campaign compared with the original expectations.
Ralf Schumacher backs Kimi Antonelli as worthy F1 champion
Ralf Schumacher identified Mercedes as the leading force of the first half of the season after the team completed a remarkable recovery from its previous period of difficulty. At the centre of that resurgence has been Kimi Antonelli, whose performances have made the young Italian the outstanding figure in Mercedes’s return to the front.
“Of course, many of us expected Kimi Antonelli to do well, but the speed at which he has matured compared with last year and, above all, the composure he has shown so far are truly incredible,” Ralf Schumacher explained. “Kimi Antonelli would be a worthy Formula 1 world champion and would deserve the title because, at the moment, he is managing to get a little more out of the W17 than George Russell.”
Ralf Schumacher therefore highlighted not only Kimi Antonelli’s natural talent but also his ability to extract superior performance compared with his more experienced team-mate. The Mercedes W17 is competitive, but it does not yet appear to have reached its maximum potential.
Ralf Schumacher’s endorsement adds another perspective to the debate over the championship leader, with Toto Wolff declining to call Kimi Antonelli the title favourite despite his substantial advantage.
Mercedes warned it urgently needs W17 upgrades
Despite Mercedes’s strong results, Ralf Schumacher issued a clear warning to the Brackley-based team. Its position at the front is no longer secure, and the former Formula 1 driver believes a rapid technical response will be required after the summer break.
“However, Mercedes cannot rest on its laurels. It has to bring upgrades, and it has to do so quickly, because McLaren has improved considerably and Ferrari has demonstrated that it has a winning car,” Ralf Schumacher said. “Mercedes no longer has any margin. The Grands Prix have become a battle.
“Red Bull must never be underestimated either, because Max Verstappen is still Max Verstappen. In short, I am curious to see what Mercedes will bring after the summer break. I would be surprised if it did not upgrade its car.”
Mercedes is already preparing changes to its approach as a major W17 upgrade package takes shape. Ralf Schumacher’s assessment suggests those developments could be crucial to preserving Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead.
McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull increase pressure on Mercedes
In Ralf Schumacher’s view, the points advantage accumulated during the first half of the campaign no longer guarantees Mercedes a clear performance superiority. McLaren has made significant progress, Ferrari has proved capable of winning and Red Bull remains a threat whenever Max Verstappen can exploit the car’s potential.
Every Grand Prix has consequently become a close, direct contest. Mercedes will need to respond with fast and effective technical development if it is to maintain its position at the top throughout the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.
