During the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone, Italian racing driver Kimi Antonelli addressed a range of topics, including the swirling rumors of potential contact between reigning World Champion Max Verstappen and Mercedes, as well as his early retirement in Austria.
With the 2025 Formula 1 season now at its midpoint, speculation has intensified regarding the future of Max Verstappen. According to various rumors, the Dutch driver may have already held talks with the Mercedes team, possibly considering a move away from Red Bull Racing. Such a development would inevitably have consequences for Mercedes’ current lineup, potentially forcing either George Russell or rookie driver Kimi Antonelli to make way at the end of the season.
Speaking to F1 media ahead of the Grand Prix at Silverstone, Kimi Antonelli remained composed and unshaken by the speculation. The young Italian emphasized that his focus remains on performance and continuous improvement, adding that he feels secure within the Brackley-based team.
“I’m not too worried about myself. I’m just trying to concentrate as much as I can on what I need to do in order to deliver the best performance possible. I believe the team has shown a great deal of trust in me and continues to support me, giving me the time and space I need to grow as a driver.”
Apologies to Max Verstappen after Austrian GP incident
Kimi Antonelli also revisited the controversial incident that occurred during the Austrian Grand Prix, in which he was involved in a first-lap collision with Max Verstappen. The Italian rookie took full responsibility for the contact and described the moment he approached the three-time World Champion to apologize in person.
“From my side, I think last weekend was not one of my best. At the same time, I’m working hard to improve on my weaknesses. I immediately recognized that I had made a mistake, and of course, it was my fault.”
“I also felt sorry for my own team because it’s never good to retire on the first lap of a race. But on top of that, I took Max out of the race as well, which obviously wasn’t something I intended. It wasn’t deliberate, and I truly felt sorry for him too.”
“I went to apologize to him out of respect, and because I genuinely regretted what had happened. He was very kind and open with me. He understood the message I was trying to convey.”
Antonelli looking to bounce back at Silverstone
Turning the page after a disappointing race in Spielberg, Kimi Antonelli is eager to make a strong comeback at Silverstone. The British track holds fond memories for the Mercedes rookie, who claimed a memorable win there in Formula 2 last season with the PREMA Racing team.
“I’m really excited for this weekend. I think Silverstone is always something special because the atmosphere is just incredible. I believe this is a great opportunity to bounce back, especially after the difficult race in Austria. I can’t wait to get back on track tomorrow and see what we’re capable of.”
