It was a memorable F1 weekend for Kimi Antonelli, who secured an excellent second place at Interlagos, finishing behind Lando Norris and ahead of Max Verstappen. After a challenging mid-season period, the young driver from Bologna returned to competitiveness, demonstrating consistency, speed, and greater maturity in race management. This result, achieved after a weekend consistently outperforming teammate George Russell, is also an important signal for the future.
Mercedes: Antonelli’s podium irritates Russell
The feeling in the paddock is that, after renewing his contract, George Russell has become somewhat complacent, while Kimi has made the crucial step forward he needed. This progression was strongly supported by Toto Wolff and the rest of the Brackley team. The growing Italian talent is becoming both a challenging and inspiring presence within the Mercedes garage.
Antonelli himself confirmed a shift in his relationship with his teammate. “Certainly, my relationship with George is evolving,” Kimi admitted. “It’s natural that he isn’t happy finishing behind me, just as I’m never happy when I’m behind. The relationship has changed and will continue to change, but there’s a lot of respect between us and a healthy dynamic in the team, because we are pushing each other.”
Confidence boost for Las Vegas and beyond
Kimi Antonelli highlighted how this result injects confidence for the final stages of the season, particularly for the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix. “This weekend gives us incredible momentum heading into Las Vegas, where the team performed brilliantly last year. We hope to be strong again; obviously, the car has different characteristics compared to 2024, but the DNA is very similar.”
Bouncing back from a difficult period
On a personal level, the Bolognese driver expressed satisfaction at rebounding from a challenging stretch. “I’m coming off a positive period. Even in Mexico, things went well, although the results didn’t fully reflect the potential. The key difference this weekend was being able to put everything together, even the small details,” he explained, still visibly emotional from the impressive achievement.
Taking a moment to breathe, Kimi Antonelli added: “It was a truly emotional result, because in the previous months I went through a very dark period. I managed to get through it, so this podium is really special on a personal level.” His words convey the sense of relief and liberation he felt during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend—something he deeply needed.
Antonelli solidifies his presence in Mercedes
Kimi Antonelli’s second place capped a weekend that restored confidence to Mercedes, increasingly solid in the battle for second in the Constructors’ Championship. The young Italian is emerging as a technical and human reference point within the team. Rumors may already be circulating at Ferrari about potentially recruiting him in the future, possibly bringing him to Maranello.
At just 19 years old, the Italian talent is beginning to show the composure and determination needed to succeed in Formula 1. He is fully aware that his journey is still long and just beginning, but he is on the right path. While still very young, the experience he is gaining in a top-tier team is invaluable, undoubtedly preparing him for the challenges of the next regulatory cycle.
