Andrea Kimi Antonelli is now just two points away from becoming the 2026 Formula 1 world champion after securing his ninth victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver dominated Sunday’s race at the Circuit of The Americas, finishing approximately 15 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, and could clinch his maiden world championship next weekend in Mexico with a ninth-place finish.
Despite moving within touching distance of the title, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has no intention of simply settling for the minimum result required to become champion. After another outstanding performance in Austin, the Italian wants to maintain the attacking mentality that has defined his season and secure the championship in style, ideally with another victory.
It has been a remarkable campaign for the young Mercedes driver, who has become the team’s leading figure, winning when he had the strongest car and helping Mercedes through more challenging periods. His latest triumph has brought him closer than ever to completing a championship-winning season, while also demonstrating the progress the team has made in understanding its recent technical upgrades.
Kimi Antonelli dominates Austin to move two points from F1 title
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s ninth victory of the 2026 season was considerably more commanding than the final margin of approximately 15 seconds over Charles Leclerc might suggest. From the moment the lights went out, the Mercedes driver established control of the United States Grand Prix and rarely appeared under serious threat.
Starting from pole position, Andrea Kimi Antonelli immediately began pulling away from his rivals, taking advantage of the battle between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen through the opening corners. Although the Red Bull driver recovered second place after briefly losing it at the start, the Italian had already established a gap of approximately two seconds, an advantage that would prove crucial during the opening stint.
Even though Andrea Kimi Antonelli started on a harder tyre compound than his immediate rivals, he managed his tyres exceptionally well throughout the first stint. His pace was sufficient to keep Max Verstappen at a safe distance while extending his initial run, making a one-stop strategy possible.
Realising that following the same approach would not be enough to beat the Mercedes driver, Red Bull decided to try a different strategy. The team brought Max Verstappen into the pits earlier and switched to a two-stop approach in an attempt to create an opportunity to challenge for victory.
However, that alternative strategy ultimately failed to threaten Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s lead. The Italian maximised the effectiveness of his one-stop approach, which Mercedes calculated to be approximately eight seconds faster overall than completing the race with two pit stops.
“It was a great weekend. It was nice to finish with a victory and I’m really happy about that,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained to Sky after the race.
“I managed to make a great start, and from there I wasn’t sure how much I needed to manage or how much I could push, but we managed to go long on the first set of medium tyres. At that point, it was clear that we were going to make just one stop.”
The strategic advantage was particularly significant at a circuit where tyre management had been one of the central talking points before the race. Pirelli’s pre-race analysis of the Austin tyre strategy had already highlighted the potential effectiveness of a one-stop approach, provided teams could keep degradation under control.
Mercedes W17 upgrades finally show signs of delivering results
Beyond the victory itself, which takes Andrea Kimi Antonelli to nine wins this season, three times the total achieved by Mercedes teammate George Russell, another important development emerged from the Austin weekend. Mercedes appears to be making meaningful progress in understanding how to extract performance from its latest upgrade package.
That does not mean every problem with the Mercedes W17 has been resolved. However, the United States Grand Prix suggested that the team has begun moving in the right direction after struggling to fully exploit its recent technical developments.
The Circuit of The Americas provides a comprehensive examination of Formula 1 machinery, combining slow corners, high-speed sections and long straights. It was therefore a particularly valuable venue for assessing the Mercedes upgrade package and the car’s overall performance characteristics.
One of the qualities that allowed Mercedes to dominate the opening part of the championship was its ability to perform consistently across different types of corners without necessarily being the outright strongest car in any one particular section. That characteristic was evident again in Austin, where the W17 demonstrated a balanced overall performance.
Crucially, Mercedes managed to control rear tyre degradation through the third sector, allowing Andrea Kimi Antonelli to extend his first stint and commit to the one-stop strategy that ultimately secured another victory.
The improved tyre management proved especially valuable when Red Bull attempted to challenge through an alternative pit-stop strategy. Rather than reacting to its rival, Mercedes was able to remain committed to its original approach, confident that the overall race time would favour its driver.
Antonelli explains how Mercedes overcame unexpected balance problems
The latest Mercedes upgrade package had introduced an unexpected change in the car’s balance, shifting it further towards the front axle than the team had anticipated. This created difficulties during Friday’s running, forcing Mercedes to work on understanding the revised behaviour of the W17.
Over the course of the weekend, the team managed to mitigate at least some of those problems. By Sunday, the improvements had helped establish the foundations for Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s dominant victory.
“I’m happy, it was a good weekend. I want to thank the whole team because they’re doing an enormous amount of work to understand this package. Now we’ll try to finish in style,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained.
“There are still some areas where we need to improve, but in others [the new package] is working really well. In the medium- and high-speed corners, the car is excellent and the balance is good. We’re still struggling a little in the slow corners, where we have some problems with front locking, but overall I think the package is delivering results. We’re finally starting to see the results and improvements brought by the upgrades.”
Those comments illustrate the contrasting characteristics of the updated Mercedes W17. While its behaviour in slower corners still requires attention, the improved balance and performance through medium- and high-speed sections have given the team encouraging indications about the effectiveness of its development programme.
Most importantly, Mercedes has begun translating those improvements into results on track, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli demonstrating how effectively the upgraded car can perform when its strengths are maximised and its remaining weaknesses are managed.
Kimi Antonelli refuses to settle as Mexico title opportunity approaches
Andrea Kimi Antonelli now heads to the Mexican Grand Prix knowing that just two additional championship points would be enough to secure the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship. A ninth-place finish in Mexico City would guarantee him the title, bringing an extraordinary season to its ultimate conclusion.
However, the Mercedes driver remains reluctant to discuss the championship too openly. That approach is partly about avoiding superstition and unnecessary pressure ahead of a weekend that will inevitably feel different from those that have come before it, but it also reflects his determination to maintain the same competitive hunger he has demonstrated throughout the year.
Before the summer break, Andrea Kimi Antonelli had already explained that he did not want to become distracted by thoughts of the championship. Instead, his intention was to continue winning races, pushing hard and adding further victories, believing that maintaining that approach represented the best way to manage the title fight.
That philosophy has remained unchanged despite the increasingly favourable championship situation. Winning the world title is the overriding priority, but after such an exceptional season, Andrea Kimi Antonelli would prefer to secure it with another strong performance, and potentially another victory.
“Until it’s over, it’s not over. It would be wonderful to wrap up the championship in style with another good result and then enjoy everything else and the rest of the season.”
The finishing line is now within reach. With nine victories to his name and only two points separating him from the world championship, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has the opportunity to achieve his ultimate ambition in Mexico. Yet after spending the entire season attacking rather than settling, the Mercedes driver appears determined to approach his first chance to become Formula 1 world champion in exactly the same way.
