Max Verstappen was left furious with Red Bull after a frustrating United States Grand Prix in which tyre choices, a slow pit stop and engine-braking problems contributed to his defeat by Charles Leclerc in the fight for second place. The Dutch driver finished third behind race winner Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, admitting over team radio that a late Virtual Safety Car had helped him retain the final podium position as Lewis Hamilton closed in.
The result ended Max Verstappen’s run of two consecutive victories in Malaysia and Singapore. Having started second on the grid at the Circuit of The Americas, the Red Bull driver had been expected to provide the main challenge to Kimi Antonelli for victory. Instead, a difficult afternoon and an unsuccessful strategy left him fighting to protect third place in the closing laps.
Max Verstappen’s Austin frustration ends his winning streak
Max Verstappen arrived in Austin hoping to complete a hat-trick of victories after winning the Malaysian and Singapore Grands Prix. Starting alongside pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli, the Dutchman appeared well placed to challenge the Mercedes driver, particularly after Red Bull had demonstrated competitive pace during qualifying.
However, the race developed very differently from what Max Verstappen had anticipated. Red Bull’s tyre strategy failed to deliver the expected performance, while a particularly slow second pit stop further complicated his afternoon. The problems contributed to his eventual defeat in the battle with Charles Leclerc, who recovered to finish ahead of the Red Bull driver.
Despite securing another podium, Max Verstappen was therefore among the more disappointed leading contenders at the end of the United States Grand Prix. The third-place finish represented a respectable result in isolation, but fell short of the victory he had hoped to challenge for when the race began.
Max Verstappen attacks Red Bull’s tyres, pit stop and engine braking over team radio
Max Verstappen made no attempt to conceal his anger during his post-race radio exchange with the Red Bull pit wall. The Dutchman listed several problems that had undermined his performance, criticising both the tyre choices and the execution of his second pit stop.
“It was terrible,” Max Verstappen said over team radio. “The pace, the wrong tyres, a s*** pit stop and the problems with engine braking. Nothing worked. I was lucky with the Virtual Safety Car at the end.”
His frustration reflected a race in which Red Bull had been unable to make its strategy work effectively. The combination of tyre-related difficulties, lost time in the pits and problems with the car’s engine-braking behaviour prevented Max Verstappen from maintaining the performance needed to challenge for victory.
The slow second pit stop was particularly costly in the context of his battle with Charles Leclerc. Ferrari’s driver ultimately secured second place, leaving Max Verstappen to defend third rather than attack the Mercedes ahead.
Charles Leclerc takes second as Lewis Hamilton closes on Max Verstappen
Charles Leclerc was one of the main beneficiaries of Max Verstappen’s difficult afternoon. The Ferrari driver produced a strong recovery and eventually overtook the Red Bull to claim second place, leaving the Dutchman facing pressure from another Ferrari in the closing stages.
Lewis Hamilton was making rapid progress towards Max Verstappen and appeared capable of challenging for the final podium position. The seven-time world champion had recovered to fourth place and was reducing the gap to his long-time rival when the race was interrupted by a late Virtual Safety Car.
The neutralisation slowed Lewis Hamilton’s pursuit and reduced the time available for a potential attack. Max Verstappen subsequently acknowledged that the interruption had worked in his favour, admitting that he had been fortunate to retain third place.
For Ferrari, the result was encouraging, with Charles Leclerc finishing second and Lewis Hamilton fourth in Austin. However, the late Virtual Safety Car also prevented Lewis Hamilton from fully exploiting his momentum in the final laps against Max Verstappen.
Max Verstappen reiterates criticism after the United States GP
Max Verstappen expressed essentially the same concerns during his traditional post-race interview ahead of the podium ceremony, although his assessment was considerably more restrained than the language used during his radio exchange.
The result was particularly frustrating because the Red Bull driver had approached the United States Grand Prix as one of the principal contenders for victory. Instead, he was forced to settle for third place after a race in which several aspects of the car and team operations had failed to meet expectations.
Nevertheless, the outcome was not entirely negative for Red Bull. Although Max Verstappen missed out on a third consecutive victory, his podium finish helped the team achieve an important result in the Constructors’ Championship.
Red Bull draw level with McLaren in F1 Constructors’ Championship
The main consolation for Red Bull was its progress in the Constructors’ Championship. Following the United States Grand Prix, the team drew level with McLaren in third place in the standings, with both constructors on 355 points.
That development provided a positive conclusion to an otherwise disappointing afternoon for Max Verstappen. While the Dutchman was frustrated by the missed opportunity to challenge Kimi Antonelli and the eventual loss of second place to Charles Leclerc, Red Bull’s overall championship position improved.
The contrast between the driver’s disappointment and the team’s championship gain summed up a complicated United States Grand Prix. Max Verstappen left Austin dissatisfied with the pace, tyres, pit-stop execution and engine braking of his RB22, but a fortunate late Virtual Safety Car allowed him to protect a podium that helped Red Bull catch McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship.
