Williams Racing launches 2026 challenger: James Vowles on the “next step” back to the top. Williams officially launches the FW48.

F1 | Williams unveils the FW48 and officially enters 2026. Vowles: “No one knows what will happen at the first race”

The 2026 season for Williams begins today, with the official presentation of the new FW48. James Vowles aims for the top and makes no secret of it—here’s what he said!

Williams F1 has officially revealed the FW48, the car that marks the team from Grove’s entry into the new regulatory era of 2026. This highly anticipated debut was accompanied by comments from James Vowles, who immediately made one point clear: enthusiasm, yes, but without illusions. The British team was one of the few yet to show the final 2026 livery, along with Cadillac and McLaren. Unlike the other teams, however, Williams was also the only one not to hit the track during the pre-season tests in Barcelona. This was a necessary choice, due to delays that emerged in the final stages of the project, which led the team to skip the shakedown in order to focus on more complete preparation for the Bahrain test, with the aim of quickly making up lost ground.

2026: a key year for Williams

Commenting on the FW48 launch, James Vowles explained the moment Williams F1 is experiencing, emphasizing how 2026 represents a key step in the team’s growth journey: “2026 is the next step in the Atlassian Williams F1 Team’s path back to the top as we enter a new era for this sport, and we are excited about the season ahead.”

The Team Principal also stressed the importance of keeping a grounded approach, despite the positive signals from the past year: “We have a great driver lineup, some fantastic new partners, a growing fanbase, and we want to build on the success we tasted last year. But we are not naive about the challenge ahead. No one really knows what will happen at the first race, but we are looking forward to finding out, and we hope our fans enjoy cheering for us with this beautiful new livery.”

The launch of the Williams FW48 marks a defining chapter in James Vowles’ mission to return the historic team to its former glory, positioning the 2026 regulatory reset as the ultimate proving ground for their internal restructuring. While the decision to skip the Barcelona shakedown highlights the immense pressure and tight timelines facing the Grove engineering team, Vowles’ focus on long-term “success” rather than short-term “illusions” suggests a high level of confidence in the car’s fundamental design. With a powerhouse driver pairing and the hope of a class-leading Mercedes engine, Williams is betting that their “next step” will bridge the gap to the frontrunners, even if the true pecking order remains a mystery until the lights go out at the first race.

Williams has officially entered the 2026 era with the reveal of the FW48, as James Vowles balances the excitement of the team’s progress with a realistic view of the unpredictability facing the entire F1 grid.
