It is far too early to suggest that George Russell has surrendered in the 2026 Formula 1 title fight, but one moment during the Monaco Grand Prix perfectly illustrated the contrasting fortunes currently being experienced by the two Mercedes drivers.
As Kimi Antonelli continued to control the race at the front, George Russell found himself in the uncomfortable position of receiving blue flags to allow his own teammate through. Around the narrow streets of Monte Carlo, where track position is everything, the sight of the championship leader lapping the driver in the sister Mercedes was one of the most striking images of the afternoon.
Antonelli takes control while Russell struggles
Russell’s race was compromised by time lost behind Isack Hadjar, who was reportedly dealing with issues related to first gear. Unable to find a way past quickly, the British driver became trapped in traffic while the leaders continued to build their advantage.
At the front, Antonelli adopted an aggressive approach that is not always seen in Monaco. Rather than managing his pace conservatively, the Italian pushed hard from the opening stages and steadily increased his advantage over much of the field.

The situation changed later in the race when a Safety Car was deployed following Lance Stroll’s accident. The neutralisation allowed all lapped drivers to unlap themselves, erasing the immediate visual impact of Antonelli’s achievement.
Before the restart, only Antonelli and the two Ferrari drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, remained on the lead lap. That statistic alone highlighted the pace advantage enjoyed by the front-runners around the Principality.
Although the Safety Car reduced the gap on paper, it could not erase the significance of what had happened earlier. For many observers, seeing Antonelli lap his more experienced teammate was one of the defining moments of the Monaco Grand Prix and another sign that the young Mercedes star is rapidly emerging as the benchmark within the team.
