A United Front
Perhaps because the generational shift is now almost complete—by 2025, only three of the 20 drivers will have been born in the 1980s—but, in any case, Johnny Herbert believes the current Formula 1 drivers are more united than they have been in decades. According to him, race stewards now face a cohesive group rather than individual competitors.
“The drivers are more united than ever and are like a pack,” said former driver and now Race Steward Johnny Herbert in an interview with CoinPoker. “They are very critical. I haven’t seen such harmony in over 30 years.” Herbert believes this unity among drivers is significant because it gives them more ‘power’ when negotiating with the Federation to potentially revise or update certain rules. “It’s good that they have a say. The more they do, the more they are heard, and that’s important,” added Herbert.
Regarding tensions involving Johnny Herbert and Jos and Max Verstappen, the former driver denied any lingering disputes or bias in decision-making based on personal dislikes: “Yes, there are disagreements and frustrations, but you move on. It’s the only way. There is no animosity with the drivers or their fathers. Everyone knows being a Race Steward is a tough job. I haven’t felt that this has impacted the relationships I have in the paddock. There’s enough mutual respect among everyone.” – he concluded.
