Max Verstappen compared to Michael Schumacher—this is the view of Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard after last week’s events in Mexico. The Dutch driver’s style and aggression continue to stir discussion. He’s faced strong criticism, including from Damon Hill, following penalties incurred during his duel with Lando Norris.
The three-time world champion responded directly yesterday in a press conference, emphasizing that he doesn’t need lessons from anyone.
Verstappen as Schumacher
Another perspective on the situation came from Eddie Jordan on the Formula For Success podcast. The former team manager drew a comparison between Verstappen and the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.
“Listen, we all know he’s Michael Schumacher in disguise, don’t we? Honestly. Max is a demon when he gets into that car. He puts on the helmet, and it’s like horns sprout. I think he got quite the wake-up call in Mexico, and I hope he learns from it. Some of what we’ve seen are not necessarily things we want to see. However, this is Max. This is his style, and I don’t think he intends to change it. He probably picked it up from his father, Jos.” – he pointed out at the end of the Mexican Grand Prix.
A unique driver
David Coulthard, co-host of the podcast, also supported the comparison between Max and the German champion.
“Basically, what Max has done is be the Michael Schumacher of our time,” explained the former McLaren driver. “He’s willing to push beyond limits to discover where the boundaries in sport really are. I believe this is absolutely part of his DNA, part of his success, and part of what makes every driver know they have to fight fire with fire. I think it was inevitable, after the debate over what we saw in Austin, that penalties would be applied in Mexico. But I don’t think Max will act any differently if the same situation arises.” – the former Formula 1 driver added.
“In fact, the fact that he’s different from others is what makes him who he is. Every sport needs the good guys, the bad guys, and everything in between.” – David Coulthard concluded.
