On the streets of Singapore, Lando Norris delivered a performance that impressed David Coulthard. The former British driver even went so far as to compare his fellow countryman’s feat to the achievements of Formula 1 legends.
Lando Norris faced no competition during the race and crossed the finish line with more than a 20-second lead over Max Verstappen. The only risks he encountered were self-inflicted, as he touched the wall twice. These mistakes earned him some criticism, including from 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg. However, Lando Norris also received much praise for his performance at the 4.94-kilometre Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The comparison to the greats
Following Lando Norris’ win in the Singapore Grand Prix, David Coulthard spoke on Channel 4, highlighting the McLaren driver’s fantastic performance.
“What a performance! Man and machine in perfect harmony. Lando is so humble and down-to-earth that he doesn’t realize how great and significant his achievements are right now. I want to place it alongside the performances of Senna, Schumacher, and Hamilton at their best. Anyone can win a Grand Prix with a bit of luck, but this was exceptional,” declared the former driver.
Despite the great success, Lando Norris is still 52 points behind Max Verstappen in the world championship standings ahead of the United States Grand Prix. It’s practically the same situation as after the Miami GP, but now there are only six races left until the end of the season.
A comeback is certainly difficult, but not impossible. Red Bull is no longer dominant, but they will bring some updates to Austin for the next round of the championship in order to try and close the gap on a runaway McLaren. The challenge remains open in this final stretch of the 2024 Formula 1 championship.
