It had been over 16 years since the Italian tricolor stood on the podiums of both top motorsport categories within a few hours of each other.
From Rossi-Trulli to Bezzecchi-Antonelli
From April 26, 2009, to November 9, 2025, Italy had not celebrated a podium in F1 and MotoGP on the same Sunday. And just like then, it wasn’t the handiwork of the ‘Red Nationals’ of motorsport, Ferrari and Ducati.
On April 26, 2009, Valentino Rossi finished second in the Japanese GP at Motegi behind his teammate Jorge Lorenzo. Just hours later, Jarno Trulli secured third place with his Toyota in the Bahrain GP, behind winner Jenson Button (Brawn GP) and second-placed Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull.
Yesterday, Marco Bezzecchi triumphed in MotoGP at Portimão aboard his Aprilia, forming a new all-Italian pairing poised to inherit the legacy of the Bagnaia-Ducati duo. In Formula 1, Andrea Kimi Antonelli capped an outstanding weekend in Brazil by achieving the best result of his F1 career – second place – surpassing the third place he earned in Canada.
