Fernando Alonso: “Starting on Hard tires didn’t pay off. Finishing 14th is disappointing” | F1 Brazil GP. Fernando Alonso reflects on a disappointing Brazil GP for Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin 2025 F1

Fernando Alonso expressed his disappointment after the São Paulo Grand Prix, where a risky strategy failed to deliver the desired results.

Qualifying and the Sprint race at the São Paulo GP had seen Alonso in excellent form, even setting the fastest lap during SQ2. These performances suggested he could carry strong momentum into Sunday qualifying and the main race, but that was not the case for the two-time world champion.

After missing Q3, finishing 11th in qualifying, Fernando Alonso’s Sunday result in Interlagos was even more disappointing, as he could not climb higher than 14th place due to a strategy that did not pay off. “It wasn’t a great day,” Fernando Alonso admitted. “We took a risk starting on Hard tires, and unfortunately it didn’t pay off. Finishing P14 is disappointing, especially after a strong Saturday sprint. There weren’t many opportunities given the pace we had, so we tried to maximize what was possible. Now we look ahead to Las Vegas and focus on finishing the season strongly in the last three races.”

The battle for 6th place in the Constructors’ Championship also became more complicated for Aston Martin. Currently in seventh, the British team is now four points behind Racing Bulls (who scored with both drivers in Brazil) and two points ahead of Haas, who regained momentum thanks to Oliver Bearman’s 6th-place finish. Fernando Alonso’s teammate, Lance Stroll, also failed to score points in the final round, affected by the strategy that didn’t work and two incidents, first with Gabriel Bortoleto and then with Yuki Tsunoda. “It wasn’t our most positive weekend at Interlagos. We seemed more competitive in the Sprint but less so in qualifying and the main race. The incident with Yuki Tsunoda ended our chances in the race. We tried to recover, but we lost too much time. The Hard tires didn’t suit us either, but ultimately it was the lack of car pace. We return to Las Vegas in two weeks and we’ll see what we can do there.”
