George Russell delivered an exceptional performance from start to finish at the Singapore Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, the British driver never gave up the lead and completed a flawless race without a single mistake.
It was a fully deserved victory for Russell, with Mercedes showing increasingly strong progress in recent races. Behind him, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris completed the podium, both closing in on Oscar Piastri in the championship standings.
George Russell celebrates his fifth career victory
Speaking after the race, George Russell said: “It’s fantastic, especially after what happened a couple of years ago — a missed opportunity back then, but we made up for it today. I have to thank the whole team, they did an incredible job this weekend. I don’t know where this performance came from, but I’m really happy.”
The weekend didn’t start well for the Mercedes driver. During Friday’s practice session, he hit the barriers and was forced to end his session early. However, both Saturday and Sunday turned out to be entirely different stories.
“Friday was difficult for me for many reasons — I just didn’t have the right feeling with the car. I was nervous at the start when I saw Max on the soft tyres, but our first stint was fantastic and we managed to build a solid gap,” he added.
George Russell continued: “Yesterday I said that if we made a list of circuits where we thought we could win this year, Singapore would be right at the bottom. We need to understand why the performance was so strong here, and I’d love to carry it forward for the rest of the season, but it won’t be easy.”
The Mercedes driver himself admitted he was surprised by the team’s level of competitiveness. For now, though, it’s time for celebrations — and later, the team will analyze how to replicate such strong results in the future. Meanwhile, Andrea Kimi Antonelli also performed impressively, finishing fifth behind the two McLarens.
