Liam Lawson has returned to F1 for just two races and has already sparked discussions following intense confrontations with Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez. The New Zealand driver has made his presence felt in the paddock and on the track without holding back.
Indeed, at Austin, the young Racing Bulls driver made headlines by responding sharply to Fernando Alonso after an on-track tussle involving both of them. The two were later seen arguing heatedly in the paddock after the race, leading to a social media uproar.
The following weekend in Mexico City, a similar incident occurred with Sergio Perez. In that case, Liam Lawson raised his middle finger at the Mexican driver during an overtaking maneuver after an on-track clash. This attitude did not sit well with the Red Bull driver, and once again, a controversy ensued.
Liam Lawson apologized to Sergio Perez
So, during the Brazilian Grand Prix, Liam Lawson was asked for more insight into his behavior. “Of course, my goal is not to go around and make enemies. I’m not trying to cause problems or anything like that,” the New Zealander explained.
However, he then specified, “At the same time, I’m not here to make friends. That’s absolutely not my goal. I’m here to win, and that’s what I’m focused on. And in this situation, we’re fighting hard for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship, and obviously, I’m also fighting for my future in Formula 1, so that’s what I care about mainly.” – he pointed out ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend – “I apologized to Perez after what happened. But not for the on-track action; that was just fine,” concluded the Racing Bulls driver.
