Inferiority complex
In the Mexican GP last Sunday, Lando Norris managed to recover 10 points in the standings from Max Verstappen, bringing him to 47 points behind his rival after yet another duel on track between the two. However, the weekend in Mexico City had started with a sort of admission of inferiority from the McLaren driver, who had acknowledged in a press conference that he was “not yet at the level” of the reigning world champion.
No more ‘admissions’
According to Sky Sports F1 pundit—and former IndyCar and NASCAR driver—Danica Patrick, this ‘honesty’ is not helpful for the British talent in completing the comeback against his friend-rival Dutchman. “Maybe he shouldn’t say it anymore; I think that’s the approach he needs to take,” Patrick suggested. “He needs to see himself as the aggressor, as the best driver. The problem is that Max has won much more than he has, so that’s always in his mind. But I don’t think it’s necessarily something intentional.”
Substantially, however, Danica Patrick agrees with Norris and considers the current championship leader to be a better driver than the Englishman: “Lando is consistently getting great results and is becoming a driver we look to for wins, so I think his narrative will probably change a bit. But to be honest, it is true that [Verstappen is currently superior]. I just think that as an opponent, it’s not something you normally say.” – the American former professional racing driver and model concluded ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend.
