Marko comments on Russell’s hesitation as Mercedes delays driver announcement
Helmut Marko has commented on the uncertainty surrounding George Russell’s future, hinting that the British driver’s hesitation to sign with Mercedes could be a form of “revenge” for having been kept in limbo while the team explored the possibility of signing reigning world champion Max Verstappen. While discussions continue, Mercedes is evaluating long-term options and keeping the door open for a potential Verstappen move.
Mercedes yet to confirm driver line-up for 2026
Although it is expected that George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will remain with Mercedes for the 2026 season, no official agreement has been announced yet, despite Toto Wolff repeatedly stating that a formal announcement is imminent. The team even considered the possibility of signing Max Verstappen from Red Bull; however, Verstappen confirmed before the Hungarian Grand Prix that his future remains with his current team.
Negotiations between Mercedes and Russell are ongoing. Russell will likely seek a longer-term contract for stability, while Mercedes may wish to keep options open beyond 2026 in case Verstappen ever becomes available.
Helmut Marko comments on George Russell’s situation
In an interview with a German media outlet, Marko offered his perspective on why Mercedes has delayed announcing George Russell. He explained, “They are certainly not waiting for Max. Honestly, I don’t know who else could be considered the team leader. I think this is primarily about salary negotiations, especially since Russell has been kept on edge for a long time. This hesitation could be his way of taking revenge, since he has not yet made an official decision.”
Is Marko’s explanation plausible?
It appears so. George Russell, a product of the Mercedes academy, may feel sidelined after the team considered Max Verstappen, a scenario that echoes his earlier career when he had to wait years for a real chance to compete for top positions. At the same time, Mercedes’ current position is straightforward: they have little choice but to renew contracts for George and Kimi, as no alternative drivers are readily available. The key question now is how long the contracts will last and what terms will be agreed upon.
