Aston Martin’s wind and temperature nightmare: Fernando Alonso shrugs off “paranormal” spin in Qatar. Fernando Alonso jokes about his spin at the Qatar GP.

F1 | Alonso on his spin at Lusail: “It was as if the car was possessed”

Fernando Alonso joked about the AMR25’s hypersensitivity to weather and track conditions after the unusual spin he experienced at the Qatar Grand Prix.

Alonso takes the final races in good spirits

Fernando Alonso had said he would approach the last two races of the 2025 season as a celebration, knowing that once the year concluded he would never drive the AMR25 again. And he kept his word.

During the Qatar Grand Prix, Fernando experienced a rather unique spin, which cost him positions on track. In the past, the Asturian driver might not have taken it lightly. This time, however, he used his trademark humor to explain an event he himself could not fully rationalize.

“I wasn’t even pushing at full throttle”

Fernando Alonso revealed after the race that he was not even pushing the car at maximum speed when the spin occurred. “I was going slowly. The truth is, I wasn’t pushing 100%, but this car has disconnections, I don’t know what to call them, a bit paranormal. There’s a spirit inside the car,” the Spanish driver explained on television.

“On Saturday in qualifying, I suddenly lost front-end grip for three or four corners. In one of these, I suddenly ended up on the gravel, turning the wheel fully. It was as if I didn’t have front wheels…”

The AMR25’s hypersensitivity at Lusail

At Lusail, Aston Martin clearly suffered from the AMR25’s hypersensitivity to weather conditions—some gusts of wind—and track temperature. These issues had been seen repeatedly throughout the season, making race weekends very challenging for both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

“On Sunday during the race, it was the rear wheels this time, suddenly a jolt. We are hypersensitive to wind, hypersensitive to one or two degrees of temperature, always walking on a knife edge. Today I made that mistake, but fortunately I was very lucky there was no gravel, nothing in front of me, and no train of cars behind. There were only two at that moment,” Fernando Alonso said.

Looking at the weekend positively

Overall, Fernando Alonso remained positive about the Qatar weekend. “Definitely lucky with the spin,” he told the press. “On any other circuit, I might have ended up in the gravel. Two points yesterday, six today, eight in total for the Qatar weekend. This definitely exceeds our expectations. I’m really happy for the team. It’s a crucial moment in the Constructors’ Championship. We can go to Abu Dhabi with a bit less pressure and a lighter load on our shoulders.”

True to his pre-race promise, Fernando Alonso is treating every lap in the remaining days of 2025 as one lap closer to freedom from the unpredictable AMR25 – and doing it all with a smile.
