Italian Grand Prix 2025: a race of penalties for Haas
The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort had ended on a high for Haas, finally breaking a streak of ten consecutive races without both drivers in the top 10. That result, coming straight after the summer break, seemed to give the American team the right momentum heading into the Italian Grand Prix. However, at Monza the expectations were not met, with both Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon penalised and forced out of the points.
Bearman vs Sainz
Oliver Bearman, fighting Carlos Sainz for a place in the points, saw his chances collapse on lap 41 after contact with the Williams driver at the Variante della Roggia. Although both drivers managed to continue after spinning, the race stewards deemed the young Briton responsible for the incident and handed him a 10-second penalty. The sanction dropped him back to 12th place. “It’s really sad, honestly, because the car felt great. I had to fight a lot since we were slow on the straights, but without the collision with Carlos Sainz I think we could have fought for points. It’s just a real shame,” said Oliver Bearman after the race.
Ocon vs Stroll
The same fate awaited Esteban Ocon, who also received a penalty at the Variante della Roggia. The Frenchman was handed five seconds for forcing Lance Stroll off track, which left him classified 15th at the finish line. “We tried as a team to stay out and do something different. The tyres were improving lap after lap, so there was no point in stopping and losing everything, so we stayed out for a long time. Unfortunately, qualifying wasn’t good enough and it cost us more than it should have. Still, we learned something valuable from this weekend and we will come back stronger,” Ocon explained.
