Carlos Sainz admits Williams isn’t a car he loves driving at Monza GP

Carlos Sainz Jr. revealed the reasons behind his difficulties during the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The weekend had started perfectly for the Spanish driver and the Williams team, with the Grove squad appearing very competitive in the practice sessions. However, between Friday and Saturday, something changed. Both Carlos Sainz and teammate Alex Albon failed to make it into Q3, starting the race from 13th and 14th on the grid respectively.

Incident with Oliver Bearman

During the race, Sainz was involved in a minor incident with Oliver Bearman. He crossed the finish line just outside the points. In addition to the damage sustained by the car, Carlos Sainz highlighted other issues that impacted the final result.

“Typical Monza,” Sainz said during a media session including F1inGenerale, describing the incident with Bearman. “I think it’s just typical of Monza. One of the two drivers has to give way. I was ahead of the apex, and he chose not to move back. It’s just typical.”

Qualifying remains Williams’ weak point

Despite starting from the back, Albon managed to bring the Williams into the points. Carlos Sainz noted that qualifying remains the team’s main weakness: “I think both of us had strong race pace today. We were both making progress through the field. We managed to get the car where it deserved to be in terms of race pace this weekend, but clearly qualifying holds us back a lot.”

First season with Williams

The former Ferrari driver reflected on his first season with Williams: “I think I’ve had a relatively good feel for the car all year. But it’s not a car I love driving. It’s not my preferred driving style. It’s very particular; you have to drive it in a specific way. But looking at our first year, my qualifying and race pace have always been solid. The challenge is putting it all together. As a team, we’re struggling a lot. Today, we also had battery issues throughout the race.” – the Spaniard concluded at the end of the Italian Grand Prix weekend in Monza.
