Piastri: “You don’t need to win the title to prove yourself in F1. Max is the perfect example”
Australian driver Oscar Piastri showed great sportsmanship after the 2025 title race, which ultimately saw his teammate Lando Norris crowned world champion.
From third…to third
History did not repeat itself. Unlike previous instances in 2007 and 2010, this time the driver entering the final race of the championship from third place in the standings did not leave the circuit as world champion. Oscar Piastri would have needed a miracle to overturn the outcome of the season, and that miracle did not arrive. The Australian aggressively claimed second place at the start, overtaking Lando Norris on the outside, but he never appeared capable of challenging Max Verstappen for the race win.
A defeat that brings lessons
During the traditional post-race interviews, Piastri nonetheless appeared proud of his season. He had led the championship for long stretches and seemed on course to clinch the title after his victory at Zandvoort, when his points advantage over Lando Norris reached 34. From that moment onward, however, a sharp decline in performance cost him the championship.
“I think we have seen it over the years and I believe Max is the perfect example: it’s not necessary to win the world championship to prove your abilities in Formula 1,” said Oscar Piastri in the press conference following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, paying tribute to the Dutch champion sitting beside him.
Speaking to television crews, Oscar Piastri reflected on the emotional highs and lows of his 2025 season, which he believes will help him mature for the future. “I will look back on the positive moments with great pride and joy, and view the negative ones with the understanding that I’ve learned many lessons. I still have many years ahead of me and, I hope, many more opportunities,” the Australian said. McLaren, for its part, is certainly aware that it has another potential world champion in its ranks.
Make no mistake – McLaren knows it has another world-champion-in-waiting in the garage. The papaya garage now houses the 2025 champion and the driver who pushed him hardest all season long.
