With the checkered flag waved in Las Vegas in fifth place, Max Verstappen secured his fourth World Championship in 2024. This achievement came despite one of the most challenging seasons of his career. Amid comparisons with the past and mistakes made in 2024, Giampiero Lambiase commented on Max Verstappen’s F1 title win.
The start of the season seemed like a continuation of 2023, with two consecutive double wins that appeared to open the door to another season of dominance. A first sign of change came in Australia, then confirmed in Miami and Imola, moving toward a championship that was completely different and much more competitive.
Max Verstappen fought like he did in his karting days when his equipment was not superior to the others. This competitive drive brought back memories of the first Verstappen seen in Formula 1. His racing style sometimes went beyond the limits, and he paid for it with penalties on occasion. Mistakes from both the driver and the team made the season even more challenging for Red Bull with Max Verstappen. The most notable incident was in Hungary, where the Dutchman criticized the disastrous race strategy.
This behavior did not sit well with Giampiero Lambiase, who was caught in Belgium “scolding” his driver. The incident went viral, and the track engineer of Max Verstappen later commented on it after winning his fourth title.
“This year shared many similarities with 2021,” he said to Sky UK. “At times, it was quite intense. The margin we had helped him. He took another step, which is probably hard to believe. The commitment he shows with us, the respect he demonstrates toward all his fellow drivers, okay, we’ve seen a bit of it, but he doesn’t need to be there winning every single weekend. He’s grown a lot, and I’m really proud of him.”
