There was a moment in the season when Red Bull’s problems seemed to put the championship at risk. However, Max Verstappen overcame the difficulties and ended up becoming World Champion for the fourth time in his career, leaving a stunned Helmut Marko speechless after the Las Vegas GP.
In recent weeks, the Red Bull senior advisor did not hide the team’s concerns about a championship threatened by McLaren’s resurgence. The team led by Andrea Stella, in fact, had a car from the Miami weekend onwards that, at times, was the fastest on track.
Despite the RB20 facing difficulties in the latter part of the season, Max Verstappen still managed to limit the damage before pulling away definitively in the Brazilian Grand Prix at the Interlagos. The Dutchman then waited for the mathematical confirmation, which, during the Las Vegas weekend, allowed him to claim his fourth consecutive title.
Helmut Marko Praises Max Verstappen
Interviewed after the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Helmut Marko praised Max Verstappen’s greatness. “At Monza, I was skeptical,” said the Red Bull advisor. “In the following races, we managed to bounce back, and I think Max demonstrated all his greatness here. In the early stages of the race, he pushed, but then he focused on the championship.”
“It wasn’t an easy season since in some races we weren’t the fastest. Certainly, Monza was the lowest point, but we came out of it strong, without errors. Max was phenomenal in limiting the damage when he couldn’t win.”
However, Helmut Marko expressed some dissatisfaction with the Constructors’ title. “We need to have two drivers scoring points. Perez is over two hundred points behind Max. I feel sorry for our employees who won’t receive bonuses since they are tied to the position in the Constructors’ Championship.”
