Gerhard Berger on the F1 title fight: Lando Norris favorite, Oscar Piastri still a threat. Gerhard Berger believes Lando Norris is the favorite for the 2025 F1 title.

The current World Championship standings still see three drivers mathematically in contention for the title with three races remaining: Lando Norris, the championship leader, followed by teammate Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. The gap between the two McLaren drivers is 24 points, leaving the Australian with a realistic chance to close in on the Briton and challenge for the championship in the final rounds in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi. The biggest obstacle, however, is Oscar Piastri’s significant run of poor results, which has gradually allowed Norris to pull ahead since Monza.

Since the Italian Grand Prix, differing opinions have emerged regarding Oscar Piastri’s drop in performance, influenced by team orders, misfortune, and mistakes, with some critics painting a negative picture of the Australian’s capabilities. Defending him, however, is former McLaren driver Gerhard Berger, who, while indicating Lando Norris as the favorite for the title, explained his perspective on Oscar Piastri’s situation: “I back Norris,” he told sport.de. “If he avoids serious mistakes and fortune is on his side, he will win.”

Gerhard Berger added: “Piastri should not be underestimated. He went through a difficult period and continues to make errors due to lack of experience, but perhaps that period is now over. Max Verstappen never wavers, but the points gap is too large. He only has a remote chance of a surprise win—for example, if both McLarens were to retire.” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend.
