George Russell wins Dutch GP Sprint as Mercedes delivers strong Zandvoort result. George Russell controls Zandvoort Sprint while Kimi Antonelli maximises Mercedes points.

George Russell returned to winning ways for Mercedes with victory in the Dutch Grand Prix Sprint at Zandvoort, converting his pole position into a controlled success over 24 largely uneventful laps. Kimi Antonelli completed a strong result for Mercedes by finishing fourth after gaining one position at the start and deciding against taking unnecessary risks in his attempt to pass Lando Norris.

It was an efficient Sprint for Mercedes rather than a dramatic one. Russell managed the race from the front, while Antonelli maximised his points after overtaking Oscar Piastri’s McLaren at the start. The Italian later had the pace to pressure Norris but chose not to force the issue, prioritising his championship position instead.

George Russell controls Dutch GP Sprint from the front

Russell entered the Sprint on the back of an important pole position at Zandvoort, a result that had already helped restore some confidence after a difficult run before the summer break. His Sprint pole had come after he admitted to recent self-doubt, making the subsequent victory particularly valuable.

Speaking in parc fermé to David Coulthard after the race, Russell was understandably pleased with the result.

“The summer holidays have treated you well,” Coulthard told the Mercedes driver, highlighting the renewed speed Russell has shown since Formula 1 returned from the summer break.

Russell then explained how he had approached tyre management across the 24-lap Sprint.

“At the beginning I was slower to manage the tyres for the closing stages, because I knew there wouldn’t be any overtaking in the very first laps of the race.”

Rather than immediately pushing at maximum pace, Russell deliberately preserved his tyres for the later stages, anticipating that the biggest threat could develop as the field settled into the race.

Russell reveals Charles Leclerc was his main concern

The Mercedes driver was particularly wary of Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari. Russell increased his pace towards the end once it became clear that Leclerc had the speed to potentially close the gap after finding a way past Lando Norris.

“I increased the pace in the final laps because I knew that after passing Lando, Charles had the potential to catch me. Ferrari is very quick here.”

Russell’s comments reinforced the impression from earlier in the Dutch Grand Prix weekend that Ferrari had genuine performance at Zandvoort, particularly over longer runs. Mercedes nevertheless managed the situation effectively enough for Russell to remain in control until the chequered flag.

There was also a touch of fortunate timing. Heavy Dutch rain began falling on the circuit almost immediately after the drivers crossed the finish line.

“If there had been one more lap, we would have been soaked,” Russell joked. “It would have become difficult for the three of us [the podium finishers].”

Kimi Antonelli takes valuable fourth place for Mercedes

Kimi Antonelli completed a solid Mercedes performance by finishing fourth, gaining further points over Lewis Hamilton, who currently sits second in the championship for Ferrari.

The Italian also responded positively after the mistake that had compromised his Sprint Qualifying. Speaking to Sky Sport F1 Italia, Antonelli admitted the incident had served as a wake-up call.

“Yesterday’s mistake woke me up. I made a mistake, damaged the floor and compromised the entire Sprint Qualifying session. Today I felt better, but we will continue to make changes to the car ahead of qualifying.”

Antonelli gained a place at the start by moving ahead of Oscar Piastri and later found himself close enough to Lando Norris to consider another move. However, with only a limited number of additional points available, he decided that discretion was the better option.

“I was faster than Lando, but I didn’t want to take the risk and preferred to think about the points.”

That approach was particularly significant given the championship situation. The relationship between Antonelli and Russell has become increasingly important for Mercedes, with the points gap between the two Mercedes drivers already emerging as one of the major themes of the 2026 season.

Antonelli confident in Mercedes race pace

Looking ahead to qualifying and the full Dutch Grand Prix, Antonelli remained encouraged by the potential of the Mercedes over a race distance.

“The potential in terms of race pace is high. We did quite well in the Sprint, although in dirty air it’s always difficult to say.”

The Sprint therefore gave Mercedes useful evidence that its Zandvoort pace is not limited to a single qualifying lap. Russell was able to control the race from the front, while Antonelli demonstrated enough speed behind Norris to consider an attack before deciding the extra risk was not worthwhile.

Toto Wolff praises Russell victory and Antonelli’s restraint

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff offered perhaps the clearest assessment of the team’s Sprint performance, praising Russell for converting pole into victory after what he described as a period of bad luck.

“Russell has had his share of bad luck, so taking pole and winning the Sprint is great for him. It’s not a lot of points, but it’s a confidence boost.”

Wolff was equally satisfied with Antonelli’s decision not to force a risky move for only a marginal points gain, particularly after the Italian’s scare during Sprint Qualifying.

“If you have a scare like Antonelli had yesterday, when you almost lose the car, you don’t forget it for the rest of Sprint Qualifying. He drove an intelligent race, without taking risks for a single point.”

For Mercedes, the Dutch GP Sprint therefore delivered almost everything the team could reasonably have wanted. Russell turned pole position into victory and rediscovered the winning feeling, while Antonelli recovered from his qualifying difficulties to secure fourth place without compromising his wider championship ambitions.

The result also gives Mercedes further encouragement ahead of the main qualifying session and Sunday’s Grand Prix. Russell has demonstrated front-running pace throughout the Sprint phase of the weekend, while Antonelli believes the W17 still has strong potential over a full race distance.
