Fresh from signing his new contract, George Russell has shared his thoughts on Mercedes’ prospects for the 2026 Formula 1 season. Rumors have long suggested that the Brackley-based team could be among the favorites once the new regulations are introduced, and the British driver seems to fully agree with that view. After his victory in Singapore, the atmosphere within the team has become noticeably more positive, and the Austin weekend begins with renewed confidence for the Silver Arrows.
The driver lineup was officially confirmed yesterday, with Russell once again partnering Kimi Antonelli next season. Over the summer, speculation briefly linked Max Verstappen to a potential Mercedes move, but team principal Toto Wolff made it clear that his plan was always to continue with George and Kimi for the long term.
Confidence in Mercedes’ future
Speaking to the media gathered in Austin, George Russell commented on his contract renewal and expressed full trust in Mercedes’ project for 2026. “The truth is, if every single seat on the grid were available for next year and I could choose any team to race for, I believe Mercedes would still be my best chance to win the World Championship,” said the driver of car number 63.
Russell also showed great confidence in his own abilities, emphasizing that his motivation remains unchanged: “What allows me to sleep well at night is knowing that my performances have been strong. For me, winning means more than money, sponsor days, or anything else. I want to win — that’s why I’m fighting, and that’s the simple truth.”
The British driver is convinced that Mercedes represents his best opportunity to challenge for the title next year. Supporting this belief, Pierre Gasly also expressed optimism during the drivers’ press conference, praising the upcoming Mercedes power unit that Alpine will adopt from 2026 onward. According to Pierre Gasly, the performance potential of that engine could make a real difference once the new era of Formula 1 begins.
