Former Formula 1 driver Riccardo Patrese believes Andrea Kimi Antonelli has not only demonstrated extraordinary talent during the opening phase of the season but has also shown the kind of confidence and self-belief typically associated with Formula 1’s greatest champions.
The young Mercedes driver has won the last four Grands Prix and currently holds a 43-point advantage over teammate George Russell in the Drivers’ Championship, a situation that few would have predicted at the beginning of the year.
Antonelli’s start has surprised everyone
George Russell has pointed to a series of unfortunate incidents to explain his increasingly difficult championship situation. Objectively, luck has not always been on the British driver’s side this season. However, it is equally clear that Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable start to the campaign has taken many people by surprise, including his teammate.
The Italian rookie has established himself as one of the standout performers on the grid, and his approach in Canada further highlighted his growing confidence. Rather than settling for a safe result, Antonelli attacked aggressively in both the Sprint race and the Grand Prix, taking the fight directly to Russell without hesitation and without appearing concerned about the potential risks to the team’s overall result.
In the Sprint, Antonelli ultimately came away disappointed after losing out in the battle. In the Grand Prix, meanwhile, Russell’s technical retirement brought their on-track duel to an early conclusion. Nevertheless, it appeared that Antonelli had the stronger pace and was ready to continue the fight.
Patrese: Russell has been caught off guard
Speaking to F1 Hospitality provider Vision4Sport, which offers an exclusive Monaco yacht experience in partnership with the BWT Alpine team, Riccardo Patrese admitted that Antonelli’s immediate success is likely to have surprised George Russell.
“I am sure it has come as a surprise to George that Kimi has started the season so strongly with four consecutive victories,” Patrese said.
“I don’t know how he can manage this situation mentally. He has been caught off guard. I understand his frustration, but he cannot give up after so few races. Maybe in the next race it will be Antonelli’s engine that fails.”
The arrogance of champions
Patrese also highlighted a characteristic he believes is shared by many of Formula 1’s all-time greats: a certain degree of arrogance or supreme self-confidence. According to the former Williams and Benetton driver, Antonelli is beginning to display exactly that quality.
“He is no longer shy, and now sometimes he is even arrogant. But you have to be that way,” Patrese explained.
“Max Verstappen is like that. In the past, drivers like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna were like that as well. I knew he could reach this level, but probably nobody expected him to win four Grands Prix in a row, and he is becoming stronger and stronger.”
Patrese’s comments underline the growing belief within the Formula 1 paddock that Antonelli possesses not only the raw speed required to compete at the highest level, but also the mentality often associated with future world champions. His combination of pace, confidence and willingness to challenge an established teammate has quickly transformed him from a highly-rated prospect into a genuine title contender.
