Mercedes is reportedly on the verge of confirming George Russell’s contract for the 2027 Formula 1 season, a move that would effectively end speculation over a potential switch for Max Verstappen to the Silver Arrows next year.
Official announcement could come at the Red Bull Ring
According to a report from Corriere della Sera, the official announcement could arrive as early as this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.
The Italian newspaper reports that an option included in George Russell’s existing contract has now been accepted by both parties. If confirmed, Russell will continue to race alongside Andrea Kimi Antonelli in 2027, marking the third consecutive season for the Mercedes pairing.
The two drivers have already enjoyed a fiercely competitive start to the 2026 campaign, helping Mercedes establish itself as one of the leading teams on the grid before Ferrari’s recent resurgence.
George Russell’s expected contract extension would also have significant implications for the wider Formula 1 driver market. Most notably, it would close the door on any possibility of Max Verstappen joining Mercedes for the 2027 season.
Red Bull is still waiting for the Dutch driver’s decision regarding his long-term future, but if the report proves accurate, a move to Mercedes will no longer be an available option—at least not for 2027.
