After Ferrari and Red Bull, McLaren is now preparing to test its own version of the innovative “Macarena” rear wing, with the Woking-based team expected to begin on-track evaluations during free practice at this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.
No official debut at the Red Bull Ring
Ferrari’s innovative rear wing concept quickly caught the attention of the Formula 1 paddock. Nicknamed the “Macarena” rear wing, the solution first attracted widespread interest during pre-season testing in Bahrain, prompting several rival teams to develop their own interpretations of the clever aerodynamic idea introduced by the Maranello squad.
The Ferrari version, featuring an opposite-rotation rear wing mechanism, required several test sessions before making its competitive debut at the Miami Grand Prix. During the same weekend, Red Bull also unveiled its own interpretation of the concept, with an even more aggressive implementation that generated a greater degree of movement whenever the RB22 activated the device.
According to The Race, McLaren will now take the next step by carrying out the first track evaluations of its own “Macarena” this weekend in Austria. The team plans to use the free practice sessions to gather data and compare different configurations, following the same development approach Ferrari adopted during the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this season.
However, the papaya team’s new rear wing is not expected to make its official race debut at the Red Bull Ring. Instead, McLaren intends to continue refining the package before introducing it later in the championship.
Once homologated, McLaren is expected to become the first Mercedes-powered team to use this Ferrari-inspired aerodynamic solution, which has been designed to maximise straight-line speed while maintaining overall aerodynamic efficiency.
