After a dominating performance at the Singapore Grand Prix, George Russell appears to be on the verge of agreeing to a contract extension with Mercedes. The British driver can now enjoy a well-earned break before the Formula 1 circus moves to the United States for the final stretch of the 2025 season.
Details of the new agreement with Toto Wolff
The news has been circulating for some time, especially after Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal, confirmed his intention to maintain the current driver line-up once Max Verstappen declined to join the team. Following the announcement of Kimi Antonelli’s continued presence, Toto Wolff has now reportedly reached an agreement with Russell as well.
The new contract is expected to last for a single year, with the possibility of extension if certain conditions are met. Reports suggest that the so-called “Antonelli clause” could come into play, tying George Russell’s extension to his performance relative to Antonelli in the 2026 season. Should George Russell prove himself as Mercedes’ clear lead driver, the contract could automatically extend into 2027.
Other rumors indicate that a few details are still being finalized before the official announcement. Russell is said to be negotiating for the security of a two-year deal, which might also reduce his marketing obligations with the team.
The upcoming week of downtime before the Austin Grand Prix could prove crucial in finalizing the agreement, with both parties expected to announce and sign the new contract soon.
