George Russell on how 2023 against Lewis Hamilton made him stronger. 2023 defeat to Hamilton: the lessons that shaped George Russell.

How the 2023 challenge against Hamilton shaped the George Russell of today

George Russell finished well behind Lewis Hamilton in points in 2023, but it’s clear that the talented Mercedes driver learned a lot from that difficult season. The painful defeat against his renowned teammate turned out to be a defining experience for Russell, shaping the mindset that has helped him maximize the potential of the Mercedes W16 this year.

The painful 2023 season with Hamilton

After a strong start with Mercedes in 2022, George Russell struggled to replicate his performance the following season, finishing far behind his highly decorated teammate, Sir Lewis Hamilton. The 2023 campaign was clearly challenging – more in terms of results than actual performance – but it ultimately strengthened Russell as a driver. Speaking to RacingNews365, he acknowledged that the clear defeat to Hamilton was instrumental in building the driver he is today.

George Russell speaks

“It was really during my time with Lewis,” explains George Russell, “that I felt the desire to push myself beyond my limits to see if I still had more to give. I wanted to go further and see what would happen. Especially in 2023, I wasn’t satisfied with just fighting for the podium. I preferred to push beyond the limit to try to achieve something exceptional rather than settle for a podium or a fourth-place finish. But that approach sometimes backfired, so I had to slow down a bit, and in the end, that mindset probably helped me achieve better overall results.”

“This is a sport with very intense emotions, especially in the heat of the moment, and I think that’s perfectly normal,” he adds. “But when you’re in the engineers’ office, in the design office, discussing upgrades and the direction to take, it’s very important to have a clear mind and vision, to avoid overreacting in certain moments. You need to apply more objective reasoning to understand why a weekend was a failure or not, because in F1 there’s never just a single reason for a great or poor weekend. There are always theories circulating that point to certain factors as the cause of our failure, and if you act based on those, you risk going in the wrong direction,” concludes George Russell.

George Russell therefore explains how his 2023 season with Lewis Hamilton was a turning point, moving him from an aggressive “risk-everything” mindset to a more calculated and objective approach. By learning from his past failures and focusing on clear-headed technical feedback, Russell has transformed into a more consistent and resilient driver for the challenges ahead.
