The rivalry between George Russell and Max Verstappen is not limited to the track—it also plays out verbally. What many now call a “war of words” began in 2024 during the heated Qatar GP, when Verstappen was penalized for blocking Russell in qualifying.
The four-time world champion accused the Mercedes driver of trying to gain the penalty “at the table” to inherit pole position. Russell responded at Yas Marina, calling Verstappen a “bully” who had even threatened deliberate contact. The dispute involved Toto Wolff and Christian Horner, taking the tension between Mercedes and Red Bull to very high levels.
Sparks continue in 2025
The friction did not stop there. At the start of 2025, the two clashed again in Spain: after a restart behind the safety car, Verstappen felt pushed wide by Russell and reacted with a hard maneuver, which cost him three license points (later partially reduced).
Russell defended by former driver
In this context, former driver Perry McCarthy came to George Russell’s defense. Interviewed by RacingNews365, he praised the Briton’s mental strength: “George is doing an excellent job but is never praised enough. He has shown he is not afraid of Verstappen, even in this psychological battle. It is a real sign of confidence in his own abilities.”
McCarthy recalled that in 2023 Russell had beaten Lewis Hamilton on several occasions, while in 2024 he managed to take leadership of Mercedes despite contract uncertainty and pressure over the team’s future. “He has seven podiums this year, yet people seem to forget that. Being in this situation and responding with mental strength, even against Max, is a sign of maturity and leadership,” he added.
The Mercedes line-up and the future
Meanwhile, with Max Verstappen confirmed at Red Bull for 2026, the Mercedes roster remains unclear: George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have not yet been officially confirmed, but Toto Wolff has assured that it is only a matter of time. The ongoing war of words with Verstappen has already established Russell as one of the few drivers in the paddock willing not to back down in front of the Dutch champion.
