The renewal of George Russell’s contract with Mercedes has been one of the main talking points in Formula 1 for several weeks now. Initially, there were rumours that the team was waiting to finalise its strategy around a potential approach for Max Verstappen. However, the situation has now shifted — it seems the final decision lies with George Russell himself. What appears almost certain is that the British driver will continue alongside Andrea Kimi Antonelli next season, but questions remain about his long-term future.
The 2025 season has marked a moment of maturity for car number #63. With two victories — in Canada and Singapore — and remarkable consistency throughout the year, George Russell has firmly established himself among the top drivers on the grid. Following Lewis Hamilton’s departure, Mercedes has found in George Russell its new team leader. The Silver Arrows now see growing opportunities to challenge for the championship in the upcoming season.
The contract signature
Formula 1 presenter Lawrence Barretto has shed light on the main reasons behind the ongoing delay in the contract extension between George Russell and Mercedes. According to reports, beyond uncertainties regarding the contract’s structure, there is also the looming presence of Max Verstappen, who has long been admired by Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff.
At the heart of the negotiation lies a key issue: George Russell is reportedly asking for guarantees that extend through 2027 and beyond. He is believed to have rejected Mercedes’ proposal for a “one-year deal plus an optional second year” at the team’s discretion. This more flexible structure would leave Mercedes with the freedom to pursue Verstappen in case Red Bull’s performance drops after the regulatory changes in 2026.
Russell’s preference, understandably, is to secure a multi-year commitment that would guarantee his long-term future with the German team. After the Singapore Grand Prix, Toto Wolff stated that Verstappen was not currently part of Mercedes’ short-term plans and confirmed that the current driver pairing will remain unchanged for next season. However, there are still uncertainties about the seasons that follow. Wolff clarified that discussions are ongoing to iron out the finer details and convince Russell to put pen to paper.
This situation highlights the different priorities between driver and team. While George Russell is seeking stability and recognition for his performances, Mercedes is aiming to maintain flexibility in anticipation of potential changes in the driver market from 2027 onwards. The team does not want to lock itself into long contracts, preferring to keep greater decision-making freedom for the future. Understandably, this position does not fully satisfy Russell, who has consistently proven his worth on track. For now, the British driver appears to be waiting for the right balance to be found — one that would secure his position while aligning with Mercedes’ strategic vision.
