Andrea Kimi Antonelli returned to the spotlight in the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, delivering a performance that many saw as shutting the door on a potential rival – a former Ferrari driver still in contention for future opportunities. The young Italian talent, still without a secured contract beyond this season, remains one of the most talked-about figures in the paddock. Despite repeated assurances from Toto Wolff in recent months, it was clear that only results on track could truly silence speculation. In Baku, Antonelli finally delivered just that.
A turbulent 2025 season for Mercedes
The 2025 campaign has been anything but straightforward for Mercedes. The W16, the latest in the Brackley-built ground effect cars, has continued the trend of falling short in this era of technical regulations. Initially, Wolff’s dream target had been Max Verstappen, who was seen as capable of leading the Silver Arrows project even at the expense of George Russell. The Spaniard, once a key figure at Ferrari and now racing with Williams, emerged as a rumored alternative for 2026 if Antonelli failed to convince.
Antonelli strikes back: Baku could define his future
Although the prospect of Carlos Sainz joining Mercedes was never particularly realistic – the Spaniard himself has repeatedly stressed his commitment to the Williams project – Kimi Antonelli still needed a strong result to counter mounting criticism. According to Ralf Schumacher, who shared his analysis on the podcast Backstage Boxengasse, the Baku weekend may have been the turning point.
The former F1 driver explained that Kimi Antonelli delivered another important weekend, one that not only strengthened his own confidence but also reshaped how he is viewed within the team. Schumacher noted that the pressure was not only on the young rookie but also on Mercedes management, since it was Toto Wolff’s decision to bring Antonelli directly into Formula 1. For Mercedes, the stakes included not just sporting performance but also financial investment and competitiveness in the Constructors’ Championship.
Schumacher emphasized that the Azerbaijan performance was critical, giving Antonelli a solid foundation to build upon for the rest of the season. In his view, the result demonstrated enough progress to quiet speculation and effectively closed the door on Carlos Sainz as a realistic candidate for Mercedes. With this performance, Antonelli may have secured not just breathing room but also his place in Mercedes’ long-term plans.

Mercedes finds itself at a crossroads. The W16 is unlikely to change the team’s fortunes dramatically before the next regulatory cycle, making 2026 the true target year.
